Reinvent Work Space for Creative Edge

The business world is a constantly changing environment and so perhaps it follows that forward-looking companies are adapting work space to reflect the evolving culture of their organisations.

Google is one example of a business that has snubbed traditional office structure and reinvented its work space to great effect.

BRW magazine’s Great Places to Work survey last year recorded Google as the best company to work for in Australia.

A common theme among the Top 50 companies listed was the perks - employee benefits ranged from free iPods to Krispy Kreme doughnuts, to rather more conventional benefits such as education subsidies, on-site fitness centres or subsidised gym memberships, and flexible working arrangements.

Perks aside, Google’s investment in innovative interior design and fun activities has contributed to making the business an enviable place to work.

Futurespace, the interior design and architectural studio behind the Google design concept, created a variety of themed spaces to support the different ways people want to meet and work at Google.

According to the studio’s website, more than 20,000 applicants have applied to work at Google’s showcase Sydney base in the last 12 months.

Providing creative facilities such as console games, comfortable seating zones and funky refuel hubs encourages employees to feel positive about their job.

Ashani Seneviratne, from Beilby's HR Consulting Division said: “The more positive employees feel about their jobs, the more attached they become to your business, encouraging them to work harder and increase their productivity.”

In a recent Beilby survey, 45 per cent of respondents said creative work space was an essential component of office culture.
